A slide show on front page my website and other exciting news items, namely a successful Canada Council Grant application and a recent work — Leifar/Remnants (2012) has been selected for the JNAAG Juried Art Show (JJAS), which runs from May 18 to September 8, 2013.

Ragna was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1945. While her works may appear quiet and austere, they are in fact deeply involved with primordial forces and energetic patterns. Iceland is one of the most geologically volatile places on earth, a country continuously in commotion with seismic and volcanic activity. A live phone–line to Vatnajökull glacier.
An underwater microphone lead into Jökulsárlón lagoon — an outlet glacial lagoon of Vatnajökull, filled with icebergs — connected to an amplifier, and a mobile-phone, which created a live phone line to the glacier. The number +44(0)7757001122 could be called from any telephone in the world, the listener put through to Vatnajökull. A white neon sign of the phone number hung in the gallery space.

I am a visual artist. My work fits under a heading of sculpture and installation. I currently work with plastic. I completed a Batchelor of Fine Art in 1997 and Master of Fine Art in 2007. I’ve received funding via SHRC, Canada Council for the Arts, Nova Scotia Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council. My work can be found in the collections of the Nova Scotia Art Bank, Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and various private collections. I have an exhibition history that spans 15 years. My work has been reviewed, critiqued and published. It’s been 3 years since I made the decision to my focus solely on my art practice. Prior to that I raised three kids, co-founded a professional development studio for sculptors, operated a gallery, worked as an arts administrator, taught, volunteered and maintained a studio in my basement, in my kitchen or attic.

Icelandic artist of the week: Nína Tryggvadóttir.

Nína Tryggvadóttir(March 16, 1913 – June 18, 1968) is one of Iceland’s most important abstract expressionist artists and one of very few Icelandic female artists of her generation. Mainly working in painting she also did papercollage, stained glass work, mosaic and more. She frequently based her compositions on nature where Icelandic landscape and the Nordic light played an important role. (+)

The (my) ask and (might just) receive list for 2013: an invitation to present work in an exhibition anywhere outside of Canada; an invitation to present work in an exhibition anywhere inside or outside of Southern Ontario; more dancing; at least one successful application to a residency; a successful CCA grant; to find gallery representation; more dancing; more singing; do some foundry work; to plan a massive exhibition of area artists in empty storefronts in Jackson Square and other vacant sites; more spontaneous happenings; more spontaneous happenings that include dancing; more dinner parties; plan a festival on top of Jackson Square, AGH and city hall; more coffee dates; work with others towards developing a sculpture studio (foundry, metal shop, woodworking, etc.) somewhere in greater Hamilton area… If all I receive is more dancing and more dinner parties with good friends, I shall be content.

Were I to meet you on the street, I would not shake your hand. I would not lower my gaze. I would not defer, demure, or shrink timidly in your presence.

(I have seen the blanket that is mother earth filled with poison. Infested, rendered infertile. I have seen the despair, the desperation, the hopelessness, the fear. I am sitting alongside Theresa, feeling her hunger. I am standing alongside Theresa, feeling her pain.)

How dare you dismiss me? How dare you ignore me? How dare you treat me with contempt?

(I will learn the circle dance and will dance until the earth is healed. I will learn the song, and sing until the pain is gone.)

I, like Theresa, come from a long line of warrior women. I, like Theresa, am a mother. We will not lower our gaze. We will not defer, demure, or shrink timidly in your presence.
